Photosynthesis Experiment

Photosynthesis Experiment

Activity link: https://www.clearwaycommunitysolar.com/blog/science-center-home-experiments-for-kids/learn-how-photosynthesis-creates-a-natural-chemical-reaction/

Grades: 4+

Duration: 1-hour

Materials:

    • Fresh spinach leaves
    • hole puncher (or can use a hard plastic straw)
    • baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
    • liquid dishwashing detergent (only need a drop)
    • 1 plastic syringe (no needle, 10 mL or larger)
    • 2 clear cups
    • 1 measuring cup
    • 1 measuring spoon (1/8 teaspoon)
    • light source (natural sunlight works, or you can use an artificial light)

OSO alignment: Students are introduced to the concept of photosynthesis. Students learn how this chemical process helps marine plants grow bigger and multiply faster, making them nutritious food for other animals in the ocean.

NGSS performance expectations: 4-PS3-4. Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another. 5-PS3-1. Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, motion, and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun. 5-LS1-1. Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water. MS-LS1-6. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms
