Ocean Acidification in a Cup (Option 1)

Materials:
    • clear cup or container
    • 1⁄2 cup of vinegar
    • a piece of chalk or sea shells
OSO alignment: Ocean acidification will be a concept that is covered in the 2023-24 OSO curriculum update. In this activity, students learn how the ocean is getting more acidic and less oxygenated and what that means for coral reefs and animals with hard exoskeletons.
NGSS performance expectations: 5-PS1-4. Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.
MS-PS1-2. Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.
